About the Canterbury Club

For ages 5 to 11 years old.

Looking for children’s karate classes in Canterbury? You’ve found the original. Kudos Martial Arts Canterbury was established in 1996 as the very first club in what would become one of Kent’s most respected Kyokushin organisations. For 30 years, we’ve been teaching children traditional Kyokushin karate across Canterbury and the surrounding villages — helping hundreds of young students develop genuine confidence, real discipline, and life skills that stay with them long after they leave the mat.

With four convenient locations across Canterbury and Chartham, we offer more flexibility than any other children’s martial arts school in the area. Whether you’re based in the city centre, the suburbs, or the surrounding villages, there’s a Kudos Canterbury class close to you — with multiple days to choose from to suit your family’s schedule.

Serving Canterbury and surrounding areas including Bridge, Littlebourne, Chartham, Chilham, Sturry, and the surrounding East Kent villages, we make quality children’s karate training genuinely accessible for local families.

Not Your Average Children’s Karate — This is Kyokushin

Why Kyokushin is different — and why it matters for your child

You may have seen children’s karate classes that feel more like a structured play session — colourful belts handed out freely, soft techniques, and little genuine progression. That’s not what we do.

At Kudos Martial Arts we teach Kyokushin karate — a traditional Japanese full-contact martial art with a global reputation for producing some of the toughest, most technically accomplished martial artists in the world. Mas Oyama, the founder of Kyokushin, built this art on a simple principle: genuine training produces genuine results. We carry that principle into every children’s class.

For children, this means:

  • Real skills — techniques that actually work, taught progressively and properly
  • Real progression — belts earned through genuine effort and achievement, not attendance
  • Real confidence — built on actual accomplishment, not empty praise
  • Real discipline — the kind that transfers to school, home, and every area of life

Safer than you might think — smarter than most

Many parents wonder about contact in children’s karate. Here’s what makes Kyokushin genuinely different from other combat sports:

  • No repeated blows to the head — Kyokushin rules prohibit face punching, protecting children’s developing brains
  • Full body contact when age-appropriate — with proper protective equipment including body armour and head guards
  • Progressive introduction — contact work is introduced gradually as children develop technique, control, and readiness
  • Full competition option available — children who want to compete can enter full contact knockdown tournaments with comprehensive safety equipment, giving them real competition experience in the safest possible environment

All the toughness, all the development, all the achievement — with a safety-first approach that other combat sports simply don’t match.

Why Parents Choose Our Canterbury Children’s Karate Classes

Canterbury’s Original Kyokushin Club — 30 Years of Excellence

Established in 1996 by Shihan Paul Sarginson, Kudos Martial Arts Canterbury holds the honour of being the very first IKK club ever opened. Built on the foundation of authentic Kyokushin training, our Canterbury club has grown into a network of four locations, producing black belts, instructors, and tournament champions across three decades. When you choose us, you’re choosing Canterbury’s most established and experienced children’s martial arts school — with a track record that speaks for itself.

Four Convenient Canterbury Locations

No other children’s martial arts school in Canterbury offers the flexibility we do. With classes at St Stephen’s Junior School, Canterbury College, Barton Manor School, and Chartham Village Hall, there’s almost certainly a Kudos class within easy reach of your home — on a day that works for your family. All four venues maintain the same high Kyokushin standard, the same curriculum, and the same quality of instruction.

An Exceptional, Experienced Instructor Team

Our Canterbury instructor team is one of the strongest in Kent. Led by Shihan Paul, our senior team includes Shihan Russell, Shihan Amy, Senpai John, Senpai Brendon, and Senpai Nicoletta — collectively bringing decades of Kyokushin training and teaching experience to every class. All instructors are DBS checked, safeguarding certified, and experienced at drawing the best out of children of every age, personality, and ability.

Traditional Kyokushin Karate for Young Learners

We teach authentic Kyokushin karate — not a watered-down commercial version, but the real thing, adapted intelligently for young learners. Our structured coloured belt progression system gives children clear goals to work toward, teaching them what it means to set a target, work consistently, and achieve something genuinely earned.

The Option to Compete — When They’re Ready

For children who want to take their training to the next level, we offer the opportunity to compete in Kyokushin knockdown tournaments — with full body protection and head guards — as well as points-based non-contact Clicker tournaments and Kata competitions. Competition is always optional, but for those who choose it, the experience of preparing for and competing in a real tournament is one of the most character-building things a child can do. There is nothing quite like stepping onto the mat under pressure and discovering what you’re made of.

Supportive, Family-Friendly Community

Join a welcoming community of Canterbury families who have been training with us for years — some for generations. Our classes attract students from across Canterbury and surrounding villages, creating a diverse, supportive group where children encourage each other, celebrate each other’s successes, and build friendships that often last well beyond their time on the mat.

Success Stories from Our Canterbury Children’s Karate Club

Thirty years of teaching children’s karate in Canterbury has given us a perspective that very few martial arts schools can match. We’ve watched shy five-year-olds grow into confident black belt instructors. We’ve seen unfocused children transform into disciplined, high-achieving young people. We’ve produced tournament champions, dedicated competitors, and — most importantly — hundreds of well-rounded young people who carry the values of Kyokushin with them throughout their lives.

Our Canterbury club attracts students from right across Kent, which is a testament to the reputation we’ve built through three decades of consistent, high-quality instruction. Our greatest pride comes from the everyday successes:

• Shy children finding their confidence and voice
• Energetic children learning focus and self-control
• Children improving their behavior and concentration at school
• Young students developing genuine friendships and belonging
• Kids achieving goals they never thought possible
• Families growing closer through shared training

One of the most special aspects of our Canterbury club is how naturally families grow together through karate. Children who start with us often inspire their parents to join the adult classes, creating a shared family journey through martial arts that makes the Sandwich club truly unique.

But you don’t need to aspire to competition or black belt to benefit from our classes—every child who trains with us gains valuable skills, confidence, and character that serves them throughout life.

Your Child’s First Karate Class in Canterbury

Starting something new can feel daunting for children (and parents!). Here’s what happens at your child’s first class to help you both feel prepared and comfortable.

Before Class

Arrive 10 minutes early so we can welcome you properly. Your child should wear comfortable athletic clothing (t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms or leggings). We train barefoot, so no special shoes needed. Please ensure long hair is tied back and all jewelry is removed for safety.

Meeting the Instructors

Our friendly instructors will greet you and your child, explain how the class works, and answer any questions. They’ll make your child feel welcome and explain what to expect during the session.

During Class (60 minutes)

Classes follow a structured format:
• Warm-up exercises and stretching (10 mins)
• Basic techniques practice – punches, kicks, blocks (20 mins)
• Fun drills and games that teach karate skills (15 mins)
• Partner work or kata (forms) practice (10 mins)
• Cool-down and closing (5 mins)

Your child will work alongside other children their age in a supportive, encouraging environment. Our instructors ensure everyone participates at their own level—there’s no pressure, just encouragement to try their best.

After Class

We’ll check how your child found their first session and answer any questions you have. If your child enjoyed it (and most do!), we can discuss membership options and next steps. There’s absolutely no pressure—you can take time to decide what’s right for your family.

Parents Are Welcome to Watch

We encourage parents to stay and watch, especially for trial classes. All our classes have viewing areas where you can see your child’s progress. Many parents find watching so inspiring that they join our adult classes themselves!

Shihan Russell

5th Dan Black Belt

I am Shihan Russell Wilson I have over 40 years of experience in karate and martial arts holding 5th Dan in karate along with several additional Dan grade in other styles. I have dedicated my life to developing my own skills and those of others.

Throughout my journey I have taken part and competing in various competitions and served as referee as well as completing a wide range of training courses to further my knowledge. My passion for martial arts is matched by my commitment to teaching others with over 20 years of teaching guiding students of all ages and abilities.

I take great pride in helping students progress from beginners to achieving their 1st Dan. While the achievement belongs to the student i share in their success, confidence the smile on their face and a sense of accomplishment.

Shihan Amy

5th Dan Black Belt

My karate journey began in 2002 at the age of 9 and has never stopped. I started assisting 17 years ago, and for the past 9 years I have been running the Canterbury weekday evening class alongside my partner, Senpai Brendon.

Over the years, I have attended seminars with internationally recognised instructors, achieved 5th Dan, and I am currently the organisation’s Head Kata Judge and coach. I am also assistant coach to the knockdown team.

I began as a very shy, home-educated child. It hasn’t always been easy, but karate has helped to shape me into the adult I am today.

24 years on, I still love it because you never stop progressing. Regardless of your age or grade, there is always something to learn or improve on.

Sensei John

3rd Dan Black Belt

Senpai Phil

2nd Dan Black Belt

8  years since white belt to Ni Dan 2nd black belt.
About 4/5 years teaching.
Philosophy – Good knowledge is shared.
Comradeship is forged. Osu.

Senpai Glenys

2nd Dan Black Belt

I Started as a nervous 46 year old feeling out of my depth. Now a 2nd dan black belt having been training around 8 years. Been teaching from yellow belt and learnt so much along the way. I.enjoy watching kids and adults on their journey from nervous white belt to confident trophy winners

Senpai Brendon

2nd Dan Black Belt

I started training in 2013 at 18 years old with a close group of friends. Early on, I found a real drive for self‑improvement and a determination to push beyond my comfort zones — something that’s had a hugely positive impact on who I am today. I am currently a 2nd Dan black belt.

About eight years ago, I began assisting classes with Shihan Amy, and for the last three years I’ve been the head knockdown coach. In that time, we’ve continued taking fighters to high‑level national and international competitions.

Whether its on the mat or in the dojo, the best thing about teaching/coaching is seeing the students develop into determined, strong and humble karateka (a practitioner of martial arts).

Senpai Nicoleta

2nd Dan Black Belt

8 years of Kyokushin gave me a stronger heart and mind, support along years, and two dans on my black belt. Why teaching? Because this is an endless journey and passing on these values is part of it ❤️

Martial Arts FAQ Section

What age can my child start karate at your Canterbury clubs?

Children can start from age 5 across all our Canterbury venues. Our structured program is designed for children aged 5-11, with age-appropriate instruction at every stage. Younger children (5-9) focus on foundational movement, basic techniques, and fun skill-building activities, while older children (9-11) progress to more detailed Kyokushin syllabus work. We welcome children who are genuinely ready to learn

Which Canterbury venue and day should I choose?

All four venues — St Stephen’s (Saturday), Canterbury College (Sunday), Barton Manor School (Thursday), and Chartham Village Hall (Tuesday) — offer the same Kyokushin curriculum and the same high standard of instruction. Simply choose whichever day and location is most convenient for your family. If you’re not sure, contact us and we’ll help you find the best fit. With your membership, you can also attend sessions at other venues if your schedule changes.

Is Kyokushin really suitable for children — isn't it quite tough?

Kyokushin has a well-earned reputation for being a demanding, full-contact martial art — and we’re proud of that. But our children’s program is carefully structured so that training is always age-appropriate, progressive, and safe. Younger children focus on technique, fitness, and fun. Contact work is introduced gradually as children develop skill and readiness, always under close supervision with proper protective equipment. The result is children who develop genuine toughness, real confidence, and actual skills — not a soft imitation of martial arts.

What should my child wear to karate class?

For trial classes and initial sessions, wear comfortable athletic clothing like a t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms for your first few classes. We train barefoot, so no special footwear is needed. Once you join, you can purchase a karate gi (uniform).

My child is interested in MMA or kickboxing — should they try Kyokushin instead?

Kyokushin is actually the striking foundation that many of the world’s best MMA and kickboxing fighters built their careers on. It develops explosive striking power, outstanding physical conditioning, mental toughness, and competition experience — everything those disciplines offer, in a structured traditional framework with a clear progression system. For children especially, Kyokushin’s emphasis on discipline, respect, and character development alongside technical skills makes it an outstanding foundation for any future martial arts journey.

Does my child need any previous experience or fitness?

Not at all. Most children who join us start with zero martial arts experience. Our instructors are experienced at welcoming complete beginners and will guide your child through everything from the very basics. Fitness develops naturally through training — your child doesn’t need to be fit before they start. All that’s needed is a willingness to try.

Will karate help my child's confidence and behaviour?

Yes — and this is consistently the feedback we receive from Canterbury parents. The structured environment, clear progression system, and supportive instructor team create the ideal conditions for children to develop genuine confidence. Many parents notice improvements in behaviour at home, concentration at school, and social confidence within just a few weeks of starting. After 30 years of teaching Canterbury children, we’ve seen this transformation happen hundreds of times.

Can my child compete in karate tournaments?

Yes — when they’re ready and if they want to! We offer children the opportunity to enter Kyokushin knockdown tournaments (full contact with full protective equipment), Clicker tournaments (points-based, non-contact), and Kata competitions. Competition is always optional — many children train purely for fitness, confidence, and enjoyment with no interest in competing, and that’s absolutely fine. For those who do choose to compete, the experience is genuinely character-defining.

How do I book my child's trial class?

Simply choose your preferred venue and day above, click the Book Now button for that location, and select your preferred date on the booking calendar. All new students must book in advance. Once booked, we’ll confirm your place and send everything you need — what to wear, what to expect, and how to find us. Your child’s trial class costs just £10. We look forward to welcoming you!

Is karate safe for children?

Safety is our absolute priority. All our Canterbury instructors are DBS checked and safeguarding certified. Classes are structured so that children progress gradually and safely — contact work is introduced only when children have developed proper technique and understanding, always under close supervision. Kyokushin’s rules prohibit face punching, which means children are protected from the repeated head strikes that other combat sports normalise. We keep class sizes manageable so every child receives proper individual attention.
