Kyokushin Karate – The Ultimate Truth
Why We Teach Kyokushin to Children
At Kudos Martial Arts, we teach Kyokushin karate—a traditional Japanese martial art with a proven approach to child development. Unlike generic “kids’ karate” programs, Kyokushin provides a structured, progressive system that’s been refined over decades specifically to build strong foundations in young students.
Kyokushin means “Ultimate Truth,” reflecting our honest, no-nonsense approach to training. We don’t hand out belts for attendance—children earn their progress through genuine effort and achievement. This builds real confidence based on actual accomplishment, not empty praise.
What makes Kyokushin particularly effective for children is its emphasis on discipline, respect, and perseverance alongside physical techniques. Your child won’t just learn to punch and kick—they’ll develop focus, self-control, and the ability to set and achieve challenging goals. These are skills that transfer directly to improved behavior at home, better concentration at school, and increased resilience when facing life’s challenges.
Parents consistently tell us they see remarkable transformations: shy children finding their voice, hyperactive children learning self-control, unfocused children developing concentration. This is the power of authentic Kyokushin training designed specifically for young learners.

Martial Arts FAQ Section
Where can I find martial arts classes near me?
Kudos Martial Arts has four locations across Kent: Canterbury, Folkestone, Sandwich, and Aylesham. Each club offers traditional Kyokushin karate classes for all ages throughout the week. View our Locations page to find your nearest dojo, see class times, and get directions.
What age can I/my child start karate?
Children can start from age 5. We offer classes for ages 5-11 (juniors), 13-17 (teens), and 18+ (adults). There’s no upper age limit — we welcome adults of all ages who want to learn martial arts.
Do I need to be fit or have experience to start?
Not at all! Students start at all fitness levels and the majority have no previous martial arts experience. Our instructors adapt training to meet you where you are. You’ll build fitness and skill progressively through regular practice — that’s the whole point of training!
What should I wear to my first class?
Wear comfortable athletic clothing like a t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms for your first few classes. We train barefoot, so no special footwear is needed. Once you join, you’ll receive a karate gi (uniform) as part of your membership.
Can I try a class before joining?
Yes! We offer a trial class so you can experience our training firsthand before making any commitment. Book your trial through our website or contact your nearest location directly to arrange a convenient time.
What style of martial arts do you teach?
We teach Kyokushin karate, a traditional Japanese martial art known for its strong foundations, discipline, and practical self-defense techniques. Kyokushin emphasizes full-contact training, character development, and progressive belt advancement from white belt through to black belt.
Is karate good for self-defense?
Yes, Kyokushin karate is highly effective for self-defense. It teaches practical striking techniques, develops physical conditioning, and builds the awareness and composure needed to handle real-world situations. Students learn both the physical skills and the mental confidence to protect themselves.
How often should I train?
We recommend training 2-3 times per week for steady progress. Consistency matters more than intensity when developing martial arts skills — regular training brings the best results.
What is the karate belt order?
Students progress through coloured belts (kyu grades) before reaching black belt (dan grades). The typical order is: White, Orange, Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Brown, then Black belt. Each belt level has specific requirements and represents your growing skill and knowledge.
How long does it take to get a black belt?
The journey to black belt typically takes 6 -10 years of dedicated training. However, the belt is just one measure of progress — the discipline, confidence, and life skills you develop along the way are equally valuable. Each person’s journey is individual and there’s no rush.
Martial Arts FAQ Section
Will martial arts help my child's confidence?
Yes, building confidence is one of the most significant benefits children gain from martial arts. Through achieving goals (like earning new belts), mastering techniques, and training in a supportive environment, children develop genuine self-belief that extends into school, friendships, and daily life.
Is training safe for children?
Safety is our top priority. All instructors are DBS checked and safeguarding trained. Classes use age-appropriate exercises, controlled partner work, and progressive skill development. Children only participate in sparring once they have developed sufficient control and understanding, always under close supervision.
Can parents watch the classes?
Absolutely! We encourage parents to watch their children’s progress. All our locations have viewing areas. Many parents find watching classes so inspiring that they join our adult programs themselves!
Will karate make my child aggressive?
No, quite the opposite. Martial arts training teaches discipline, respect, and self-control. Students learn when it’s appropriate to use techniques (only in training or genuine self-defense) and develop greater empathy and respect for others. We find that children become more confident to stand up to bullies while showing more kindness to their peers.
How much do classes cost?
Membership prices vary by location and whether you choose individual or family packages. Visit our Pricing page for detailed information, or contact your nearest club for current rates.
What's included in the membership?
Membership through the IKK (International Karate Kyokushinkaikan) allows students to train at all IIK Clubs, includes Kyokushin Licence for member to member insurance. To take part in tournaments and to grade for belts.
Do you offer family discounts?
Yes! We offer special family membership rates when multiple family members train together. We also have dedicated family classes where parents and children can train side by side. Contact us for details about family packages.
What are your class times?
Class times vary by location and are designed to accommodate different schedules. We offer evening sessions, and weekend training. Visit our Timetable page or your specific location page to see the full schedule for your nearest club.
Which location should I choose?
Choose whichever location is most convenient for you! All our clubs maintain the same high standards of instruction and welcoming atmosphere. We have dojos in Canterbury, Folkestone, Sandwich, and Aylesham — find your nearest on our Locations page.
